Proporta Releases Twelve New Products Focusing ON PDA's and SmartPhones!
Proporta is starting 2005 with a monstrous great list of new product releases for all the leading PDA’s and Smartphones
Proporta is proud to announce the arrival of new protective cases for devices including the iPAQ hx2000, Dell Axim X50/X50v and Treo 650.
HP iPAQ hx2000
Proporta expand their extensive collection of protective cases to include the iPAQ hx2000 series. Available for the hx2000, Proporta have Aluminium and Silicone cases. Each has been specifically moulded to perfectly fit the device while giving access to the machine’s individual features such as synchronisation port and stylus.
Providing durable protection from 100% anodised aircraft grade aluminium, the hx2000 Aluminium Case securely holds your device whilst cushioning the machine from impacts courtesy of a thin layer of shock absorbent neoprene foam.
Securely housed inside the case are two SD/MMC card slots – keeping your memory cards protected and on hand.

For an impact protective case that adds virtually nothing to the slender hx2000 device, Proporta has created a Silicone Case. Manufactured from non-slip, shock absorbent silicone, the case allows the screen to be viewed fully and all controls to be accessed.

HP iPAQ h6300
Alongside the standard Alu-Leather Cases (available in Book and Flip styles) released recently for the iPAQ h6300, Proporta has developed the Flip Case further to offer a removable case for the thumboard. The leather thumboard case attaches securely to the front of the main PDA case using two heavy-duty pop-in clasps. The thumboard case is completely removable so that it can be stored separately from the main h6300 case if preferred.
A removable belt attachment system and credit card module is also provided making the case both versatile and practical to use. With the case open, you have full access to all of the h6300 features, enabling the machine to be used inside the case.

PROPORTA Releases Their New 128 MB PRO-BACKUP SD CARD
Chloe, Proporta's Marketing Director, has announced the launch of their latest edition of Proporta's PRO BACKUP product. Previously available in 32 MEG and 64 MEG sizes, they have now released a 128 MEG Version. I personally have a 64 MEG version and it has come in QUITE HANDY more then once. The key to this product is simplicity. You place the card in your Palm or Pocket PC device, it will then launch it's own Backup program on your device and then you simply select BACKUP or RESTORE. You can literally BACKUP one device onto the card, place the card in a brand new device and press RESTORE, and in minutes, you have an exact copy of your original device. I am sure you can see the advantages of that. When traveling, you can restore a corrupted device to full functionality, WITHOUT HAVING A PC. For further details or to buy one of these cards, now available in 32, 64 and the new 128 MEG Sizes, go to PROPORTA WEB SITE
Features:
Backup the entire memory of the handheld, including all documents, applications, preferences and other information.
-Uses Incremental Backup
- meaning that you only backup files which have been modified since last used to save time. In the event of partial or complete data loss simply insert the card and you are just one click away from a fully restored handheld.
- You can even encrypt your backups with a password.
- One click to backup, one click to restore - your mum could use this.

PROPORTA Announces Release of New Line Of Polycarbonate Clear Cases for Palm and IPAQ's
Crystal Clear Protection That's Unbelievably Tough and Leaves Your PDA On Display.
Proporta – It’s all become Crystal clear!
Proporta is proud to announce its newest collection of protective cases for a number of popular PDAs. Each case has been carefully designed to provide unbeatable protection whilst complementing the PDA’s stylish good-looks.
The Proporta Crystal Case is made from a plastic known as polycarbonate. This material makes the case extremely durable and scratch resistant and is also used to produce such products as protective eyewear and bullet resistant glass.
Other than being extremely protective, another major advantage the Crystal case has is that is allows the user to view their PDA whether the case is open or closed…as the case is clear the screen is always visible. The double hinge allows the case to be folded through 360 degrees, making the case comfortable to hold and suitable for both left- and right-handed users.
Individual cutouts provide the user with easy access to all the PDA’s features without sacrificing protection or usability.
The Proporta Crystal Case is made from the type of durable and scratch resistant polycarbonate plastic that's used to make protective eyewear.

- shock absorbent
- completely clear (ideal for use with GPS systems)
- cutouts give access to stylus, ports and controls

Motorola's new MPx offers a dual-hinge design, always-on connectivity and advanced specifications such as an integrated 1.3 mega pixel camera with fla
On Monday 2-26-2004, Motorola announced the Motorola MPx — a part of the Motorola MOTOPro series of handsets featuring Microsoft Windows Mobile software.
The dual-hinge device opens both lengthways as a clamshell phone and in landscape mode as an email device with a wide screen and full QWERTY keyboard.
The Motorola MPx aims to replace use of multiple devices by blending the essentials of a mobile phone, personal data assistant (PDA) and email messenger in one device. By opening the device in landscape mode, Internet browsing, streaming video and access to corporate applications are all supposed to be within easy reach using the Motorola MPx.
The tri-band GSM/GRPS Motorola MPx is a business tool, with advanced features such as built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Infrared support for data exchange. The MPx also sports a 2.8 inch, 16-bit color display providing a resolution of 320x240 pixels.
The device is built on the MOTOPro Innovation Platform, a feature rich software and hardware platform that leverages Motorola’s design and technologies, as well as the Microsoft Windows Mobile software. The Motorola MPx boasts up to 1GB of expandable memory through a SD/MMC slot, an integrated 1.3 mega pixel camera with flash, and Java technology.
The Motorola MPx will be shipped with Windows Media Player for playback of video clips. Video clips and pictures taken by the integrated camera can be sent via e-mail, MMS, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
The Motorola MPx is expected to be available in the second half of 2004, while pricing will depend on operator.

Group Sense PDA Launches Second PalmSource Phone
CANNES, France (special to eWEEK.com)—Group Sense PDA, a PalmSource licensee, announced Tuesday at the 3GSM World Congress here its second PalmSource phone: the Xplore G88. This follows up last year's Xplore G18 and is a multifeature smartphone running Palm OS 4.1.2.
It has a a built-in 320-by-240 digital camera with zoom, 16MB RAM, a 22MB Flash Internal Memory Card with WAP/e-mail/Java support and a push-out keyboard like the Nokia 7650, but is a lot smaller and lighter.
Key to this announcement is that the product is a PalmSource smartphone (as opposed to a PalmSource PDA with built-in cellular) and is a high-spec device that networks can put under their own badge and sell in high volumes.
High volumes for smartphones, that is. A useful reality check to keep by you in Cannes is the knowledge that although Symbian has apparently won the smartphone war so far, its total sold licences are dwarfed by the total size of the phone market. In smartphones, PalmSource frequently suffers from the "too little, too late" tag. PalmSource's business development vice president, Albert Chu, declined to share market figures during the company's quiet period.
"We believe that the new G88 demonstrates GSPDA's continued track record to bring innovative and easy-to-use Palm-powered smartphones to market," said PalmSource President and CEO David Nagel. "GSPDA is not only an innovator in Palm-powered smartphone design, they also embrace their development efforts with a cutting-edge time to market approach."
GSPDA, as the company name might imply, started in PDAs and does a great deal of business in mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. In addition to PDAs and phones, it is active in education, entertainment, data storage and communications.
At recent presentations, Nagel has speculated that a wireless MP3 player could be a killer category. The notion of a wireless iPod as the "next big thing" could make a deal of sense. Wireless MP3 is something that GSPDA is looking at, and although it declined to confirm that there's a project in the works, it conceded that it's reasonable to speculate that it is working on devices in this category.

New palmOne Devices? Rumour Mill say YES!! Check Them Out!
Spring time is approaching, so it must be time for the rumors of upcoming palmOne handhelds to come in earnest, as palmOne, previously Palm, has traditionally announced new devices in the Spring and Fall. Why last year, the handheld company, released the Tungsten C and the Zire 71, two devices that helped complete a successful product turnaround for the company, which had seen its PDA line-up eclipsed by the likes of Sony and HP for excitement and the latest features.
The most recent rumor, as reported by Palm Addict, places a sequel to the Zire 71, which was palmOne's first PDA with an integrated digital camera, as appearing this spring. This device, the Zire 72, may look like the Tungsten E, palmOne's popular mid-level business PDA released last fall, and include 64MB of RAM with 56 MB available to the user, and like the Zire 71, a digital camera.
The Zire 71 only has 16 MB of memory and the camera on the Zire 72 is purported to be a far superior at 1.3 megapixels. The handheld would run Palm OS 5.2.1, now called Garnet. It may bring Bluetooth to the Zire line also.
Other rumored new handhelds from palmOne include a successor to the Treo 600. This would be the first Treo to come to light after PalmOne's merger with Handspring, the original designer

JAVOedge Has New Stylus AND I LOVE IT!!!
I recently received and have been using the new Stylograph from a JAVOedge and I must say it is my new FAVORITE stylus. Ever pick something up and it just feels instantly "right"? This is one of those items. I instantly knew it was the right weight, thickness, tip was the right size (after some initial writing, of course) and it just plain looked GOOD! Made in a dulled chrome (also comes in Black and Grey)
it looks great as well. Am I overly excited about a PDA stylus? Maybe, but at my age ya gotta grab for all the gusto you can when it comes along. But seriously, I really do like this stylus. And now for the big finish. They have put an extended, Golf Putter style head on the top of it. (Remove the top and get a nice little reset pin!) And the part I really like is that it sticks out of my Palm m500 series PERFECTLY. Just a flick of my thumb and out it pops with ease. I have always had problems fighting every stylus I've ever had. So , if your looking for a new or replacement stylus,( Available for most all makes/models of PDA by the way!) check out the folks at JAVOedge. They're good people with good product. Stay tuned, I have more reviews coming, and maybe a contest or two as well featuring some JAVOedge product !!!

Check Out Home Automation and Get $15.00 Gift Certificate.
I use X-10 Home Automation all over my house. In fact, I have actually had X-10 since I was 12 years old. I have the original walnut grained control panal from Radio Shack and the Brown modules from them as well. The stuff does last. I don't wanna telll you how long ago that was, but it is long enough. I have X-10 software/modules turn my lights on automatically, make tea in the morning and automatically turn my lights on and off when I am away. It is worth a look, and it is inexpensive, very inexpensive. So if you have not looked at X-10 check 'em out, they have neat stuff.
Note: I just added a tabletop controller on my Mom's nitestand and gave her a PalmTop Controller for the Living Room/Rest of House. She wakes up, Hits "3 On" and the Tea Pot Starts" I am a hero, she still is not over it! She comes upstairs and forgets to turn the lights off in hallway or downstairs, "4 Off" and she is done. And thank God, No Clapping!! LOL. You can do much more if you use the software, but in her case kjust the standard controllers was all that was needed. If anyone has questions about X-10 stuff, drop me a line be glad to help you with it.

Bluetooth Phones at Risk from 'Snarfing'
A serious Bluetooth security vulnerability allows mobile phone users' contact books to be stolen. You've heard of bluejacking - now meet 'bluesnarfing'
A security flaw has been discovered in Bluetooth that lets an attacker download all contact details along with other information from a vulnerable phone, while leaving no trace of the attack.
Unlike bluejacking, which is where users can send a message to Bluetooth phones without authorisation, this latest discovery for the wireless-data standard allows data, such as telephone numbers and diary entries, stored in a vulnerable device to be stolen by the attacker. The new exploit is called bluesnarfing.
Bluesnarfing is said to affect a number of Sony Ericsson, Ericsson and Nokia handsets, but some models are at greater risk because they invite attack even when in 'invisible mode' -- in which the handset is not supposed to broadcast its identity and should refuse connections from other Bluetooth devices.
Adam Laurie, chief security officer at UK networking and security firm AL Digital, told ZDNet UK that the Nokia 6310, 6310i, 8910 and 8910i models were at greatest risk. "On some models of phone, you are only vulnerable to attack if you are on visible mode; however, there are other models of phones where you are vulnerable even in non-visible mode," he said.
Laurie said he discovered the problem when he was asked to test how safe Bluetooth devices actually were. "Before we deploy any new technology for clients or our own staff, one of my duties is to investigate that technology and ensure it is secure. Actually rolling your sleeves up and looking at it, not just taking the manufacturers' claims at face value. When I did that, I found that it is not secure," he said.
According to Laurie, he can initiate a bluesnarfing attack from his laptop after making a modification to its Bluetooth settings: "It is a standard Bluetooth-enabled laptop and the only special bit is the software I am using in the Bluetooth stack. I have a modified the Bluetooth stack and that enables me to perform this attack," he said.
Bluesnarfing has huge potential for abuse because it leave no trace and victims will be unaware that their details have been stolen: "If your phone is in your pocket, you will be completely unaware," he said.
Laurie said he has had trouble getting the major handset manufacturers to admit the problem exists: "I have had experts telling me that it can't possibly exist because they have been trying to do this and failing."
Although the problem may affect other Bluetooth devices, such as laptops, Laurie said they are more difficult to target because the systems are more complex: "Mobiles are liable to be more vulnerable simply because the resources for menus and configuration are limited. Manufacturers try and make Bluetooth simple to use on phones, so you don't have much granularity in setting options. On a lot of phones, Bluetooth is either on or off," he said.
Laurie said that for now, there is no fix available. He said that the only way to be completely safe is to switch off the Bluetooth functionality.
AL Digital has developed several proof-of-concept utilities, but has not released them into the wild, said Laurie. They include: Bluestumbler, to monitor and log all visible Bluetooth devices (name, MAC address, signal strength, capabilities), and identify the manufacturer from MAC address lookup; and Bluesnarf, which can copy data from a target device.
According to the AL Digital's bluestumbler Web site, vulnerable phones include: Ericsson T68; Sony Ericsson R520m, T68i, T610 and Z1010; and Nokia 6310, 6310i, 7650, 8910 and 8910i.
Nokia and Sony Ericsson were not immediately available for comment.

PalmSource Shows Two OS Updates
The Palm operating system is moving forward in two directions, with the announcement of two next-generation versions of the Palm OS that will appear on devices later this year.
The two upcoming releases, mainstream Palm OS Garnet and enterprise-oriented Palm OS Cobalt, are being previewed at the PalmSource Developers Conference in San Jose, California, this week.
Both new versions of the Palm OS are intended to make the popular handheld operating system more powerful than ever, and able to support an even wider range of hardware than the current array of Palm-based personal digital assistants and wireless communicators.
Cobalt's Shine
Palm OS Garnet corresponds to version 5.4 of the Palm OS, while Palm OS Cobalt is the equivalent of version 6. PalmSource hopes that by not using version numbers it will keep prospective Garnet customers from thinking they're getting an old or outdated product, but the bulk of the innovation is clearly going into Palm OS Cobalt
New features in Cobalt include improved graphics and multimedia support. Its customizable status bar will look familiar to owners of recent Tungsten PDAs, and the OS has a more robust contact manager with room for more data and a tabbed layout. PalmSource has also improved its support for various types of connectivity, including simultaneous voice and data sessions.
Under the hood, Cobalt will also have support for much more memory--up to 256MB each in RAM and ROM. PalmSource hopes the memory boost plus better security features will make the OS more suitable for heavy-duty enterprise applications.
Garnet Builds on OS 5
Palm OS Garnet, meanwhile, will basically improve on the most recent Palm 5 release. Among its features are support for higher screen resolutions (including 240 by 320) and a software-based Graffiti input area that can vanish as required (and which will look familiar to Tungsten T3 owners), plus enhanced tools for finding and using Bluetooth networks. Garnet stays within the current memory limits of 128MB in RAM and 16MB in ROM.
PalmSource expects that Cobalt's features will encourage development of new Palm-based devices such as tablets, electronic book readers, game players, and other types of hardware.
Meanwhile, to attract new Palm customers who may not care about the OS's core calendar and datebook features, PalmSource is seeking greater visibility for the 20,000 or so applications for Palms.
To that end, PalmSource's Web site now features a series of expert guides to Palm applications in categories ranging from knitting and religion to law and medicine.

TMOBILE Releases TREO 600, Advanced Orders
SONY Introduces 2 New CLIE PDA's
Meet the PEG-TJ37 and PEG-TH55, just announced in Japan: features include video playback and cameras as well as coloured shells and typical Sony design.
Japanese giant Sony has added another two models to its PDA lineup: the TJ37 and TH55. Each handheld is to become available in Japan later this month, while no information on release schedules for other markets was available at the time of writing.
The TJ37 follows the general form-factor of the TJ series, adopting a 320 x 320 16-bit display with hard grafitti area in a sleek shell, which is available in a range of colours, including blue, silver and orange. The Palm OS 5-running TJ37 will be equipped with a 200 MHz ARM processor from Sony's i.MXL range, backed up by 32 MB of DRAM and 16 MB ROM.
It also features a VGA digital camera mounted on its reverse, and comes equipped with MP3-playing functionality courtesy of Aero Player. Further media ability is found in Quicktime movie playback. All this sits in a device measuring 75 x 115 x 13 mm.
The TH55 also runs Palm OS 5.2.1 atop a 123 MHz Sony processor, this time with 32 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM. The display is larger, running at Sony's highest resolution of 320 x 480, which incorporates a virtual grafitti area. The display is, of course, 16-bit.
This model incorporates the same camera found in the TJ37, but also features integrated 802.11b Wi-Fi and possibly Bluetooth. Quicktime movie playback is supplemented by MPEG-1 support and a voice recorder, although oddly no mention is made of MP3 functionality on this device.
The TH55 comes in black or red and features a new transparent flip-lid designed to allow use of the new Clie Organizer application, which offers handwritten notes and images within a standard PIM view. The device measures 73.3 x 121.5 x 15.7 mm and weighs a solid 185 g.

Al Digital Warns of the Dangers of a Bluetooth Mobile Connection
Security company AL Digital has issued a warning over some Bluetooth mobile phones that could enable a hacker to obtain access to the devices.
The company claims that a hacker could use a phone's Bluetooth connectivity to obtain a wide range of information such as a user's identity, bank account details, sales leads, business contacts and other confidential information. All this could reportedly be downloaded to the hacker's mobile phone using a wireless Bluetooth connection without the victim being aware of the theft.
AL Digital also said that the safety of vulnerable lone children or women could be compromised if their mobile number got into the wrong hands.

Pocketop starts charging for drivers (Maker of Popular InfraRed Keyboard for Palms and other PDA's )
Owners of the popular Pocketop infrared keyboard beware: upgrade your device, and you could find yourself facing $20 USD to download new drivers compatible with your unit.
As the maker of the first widely popular infrared keyboard moves to a new web site, owners of the Pocketop keyboard have suddenly found downloads of new drivers come at a price. Stepping away from the company's previous policy, drivers for numerous devices based on the Palm OS and Pocket PC platforms which were previously available as free downloads now sell for up to $20 USD each.
In an open letter to its customers, Pocketop explains why the company has found it necessary to reconsider its policy of making drivers available for free. Apologizing for delays in processing users' requests for drivers for new devices, Pocketop says the very rapid pace of development in the hand-held market, including portable keyboards, has forced the manufacturer to change its policy on issuing drivers.
Part of the company's letter reads: "Unlike Windows devices, where typically only three or four drivers are sufficient to service every PC on the market, there is a huge and growing variety of hand-held devices. We have now developed in excess of 100 drivers that enable our keyboard to be used with hundreds of different PDA/Pocket PC/and cellphone devices. This trend is escalating with the need to provide drivers for devices using the Symbian operating system. The cost to develop drivers is very high."
Additionally, the company's letter also says it has been brought to its attention that users of portable keyboards purchased from its competitors download and use Pocketop's free drivers, a further incentive for the company to introduce a registration and payment policy for drivers.
Owners of Pocketop keyboards must now register with the manufacturer and pay from $10 to $20 USD for each set of drivers, a price Pocketop said it believes is modest compared with its costs. Lastly, the company also claimed its new policy would aid the company in providing new drivers in a timely fashion to meet customers' needs as new devices enter the market.

SanDisk Wi-Fi Card PALM Drivers Pushed Back AGAIN!! Looking to 2nd Quarter 2004
SanDisk Wi-Fi SD card pushed back yet again
According to the information published on the official SanDisk web site, the company has put off the release of the highly anticipated Palm OS 5 driver for its Wi-Fi SD card.
The Palm support has already suffered quite a number of delays, and nobody can be sure that this one will be the last. The previous release date was slated for the first quarter of 2004. Now the Palm OS 5 driver is estimated for the second quarter.
SanDisk doesn’t give an explanation for this very delay, however you can read the company’s official statement on the development process of the driver in general and the problems they have to solve in order to make it finally available.
On the other hand, SanDisk may have focused on the latest SyChip’s low power Wi-Fi SD card announced some time ago, and Palm OS 5 driver for the initial version of the card is not in the high priority for the company any more.

"My Doom" EMAIL VIRUS Spreads Rapidly
MyDoom E-Mail Worm Spreading Quickly
January 26, 2004
A fast-moving Windows worm known as MyDoom on Monday began spreading at a furious rate on the Internet.
MyDoom arrives via e-mail and has a randomized sender's address and subject line. The body of the message varies, but purports to be an error message, such as: "The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII and has been sent as a binary attachment."
The file attachment is often in a ZIP archive format and can have any one of a number of file extensions, including .exe, .pif and .scr. The icon for the attachment looks like the one used for text messages in Windows.
Once the user runs the attached file, the worm copies itself to the machine in the following manner:
c:\Program Files\KaZaA\My Shared Folder\activation_crack.scr
c:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Document.scr
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\taskmon.exe
One IT manager said he was now blocking all ZIP attachements to limit the spread of MyDoom.
MyDoom also copies itself to the registry in Windows so that it executes at startup, according to a preliminary analysis by Network Associates Inc.'s McAfee Security unit. The worm also opens Port 3127 and begins listening for instructions from a remote host.
Much of the data in the worm's code is encrypted, anti-virus experts said, making analysis of the worm much more difficult. Some users reported receiving as many as 100 copies of the worm in a 30-minute span on Monday afternoon.

Ultra Personal Computers or "UPC's" Show Up at CES in Las Vegas
So-called 'ultra-personal computers', or UPCs, which squeeze a full-blown PC into a form factor more reminiscent of a PDA, have been touted as the next big thing for several years. The recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has finally shown that the UPC may at last have become a practical proposition.
The realization of the UPC concept can be attributed to a couple of crucial factors. First, component miniaturization, especially of high-quality VGA displays and hard drives, is now making a desktop-type experience feasible on a small device.
Secondly, the commitment of chip vendor Transmeta to the UPC concept, with the latest generations of its low-power Efficeon and Crusoe designs, provides the necessary horsepower to drive devices based on a 'full' desktop operating system as opposed to the relatively slim-line operating systems used by today's PDAs.
But is there really a market for such devices? To date, none of the vendors pursuing the cause has made much of an impact on the global market. Indeed, some have been stuck in a pre-production phase lasting several years. Can they escape?
PDAs and smart phones have sold the concept of ultra-portability to millions of users worldwide, but not without a few caveats. Synchronization technology might help blur the distinction between document formats on the device and those on the desktop, but the relative lack of sophistication of high-end business applications on PDAs could provide an opportunity for pygmy PCs.
The familiarity of the desktop operating system, or systems, used by UPCs might also prove a boon for corporates, with additional training, development of new applications, security considerations, maintenance and integration issues all largely-covered within existing policies.
Of course, PDAs themselves are not standing still and are developing rapidly in terms of performance and integration with other systems. But the differences between the technologies involved could leave the door open to UPCs, which could prove more flexible than their more slim-line counterparts in many circumstances.
What is really needed is a respected enterprise hardware supplier to back the concept, but many of the most likely candidates are already committed to PDAs. Without it, the UPC looks set to remain at best a niche product.

PalmOne to LayOff 12% of Workforce
PalmOne today said it will rid itself of around 100 workers - 12 per cent of its headcount - in a bid to streamline the company following its acquisition of Handspring.
Todd Bradley, the PDA maker's president and CEO, described the decision to embark on this "second phase" of the integration of the two companies as "tough but strategic".
The move centres on a "rebalancing" of the investment split between its PDA and smartphone divisions, and will "enable us to reduce overall spending", said Bradley. That, he hopes, will help the company achieve profitability in fiscal 2005.
The company is currently a month or so into the third quarter of its 2004 fiscal year, so it's giving itself plenty of time to achieve the "growth and profitability" it's after.
The company declined to state what financial impact the redundancies will have, or when it will account for the cost of the restructure, which will leave it with 740 employees

Importance of Charging Your palmOne Device (or any other Electronic Device) Before Using
HARDWARE:SETUP: INITIAL BATTERY CHARGING ON NEW PALMS
I had originally written this on another site and it slipped my mind getting it on here. In short I was adressing all of us Boys and Girls getting our new Palms and other Electronic gear , ripping the boxes open and just playing away. Well I am sure others are still getting some new after holiday sales palms so I thought I would throw it on here as well. So here we go: Well I am sure we got some adults with some new palmOne product and 2 things come to mind. The phrase "Manual! We don'need no stinking manuals!!" and "Real men don't read owner's manuals!!" Ok, some things you just can't change. But if there was ever one thing of importance with today's battery powered personal electronics, it is the first initial battery charge. It can effect the battery performance and overall life of your battery from this moment forward So, I went to palmOne and got the initial battery charge times on the current product line. Please folks, the maximum time is 3 hours, you waited all year, what's another 3 hours? Also, the majority of the times were preceeded by "At least x hours" so a little extra will not hurt anything.
So let's take another look at that new baby, and let us place it on the charger now for:
Tungsten E=3 Hours
Tungsten C=2 Hours
Tungsten W=2 Hours
Tungsten T3=2 Hours
Tungsten T2=2 Hours
Tungsten T =2 Hours
ZIRE 71=2 Hours
ZIRE 21=3 Hours
ZIRE= 3 Hours
For those of you who may prefer some simple instructions or even short video to getting started CLICK HERE and select the model that applies to you. The palmOne support and setup guides are excellent.

EDITORIAL: BLUETOOTH, Still Plugging Away At It!!
The more I use Bluetooth, the more I like it. The more I use Bluetooth, the more I see potential uses. And finally, the more I use Bluetooth, the more articles I read that it is a struggling technology that is not being accepted by the consumer. So LISTEN UP PEOPLE!! If you all cause me to lose Bluetooth, and slow down the advancement of more neater and cooler Bluetooth ideas, IM GONNA BE MAD (milder word, I prefer starts with a "P" and rhymes with KISSED). I just don not get it. It is very easy and simple to setup (Yes there can be a snag or two like with anything) All in all, it does what it is supposed to do, and that is basically eliminate wires, (That is a good idea, is it not?) and help us communicate between our different devices and keep them synchronised. (The basics, yes I know it does more) So what is the problem? OK, mini rant is over, here is the intro to an article that started me off today.
Bluetooth: At a Crossroads?
Fierce Wireless
Bluetooth is at a crossroads: the technology is appearing on more devices than ever, but it has failed to excite consumer interest. At this week's Bluetooth Americas conference in San Jose, Bluetooth insiders debated the future of the technology. Some claim that given its penetration on mobile devices, Bluetooth could take off in the next year. The Bluetooth SIG plans a number of branding and marketing exercises in 2004 designed to raise the technology's awareness among consumers. Critics, however, remain skeptical citing Bluetooth's continued inability to live up to its promise. Many analysts think Bluetooth's time has passed. Competition from WiFi and emerging rival standards such as Ultrawideband and ZigBee will, they claim, spell the end of the standard. END
Ok, now back to me. Some of the issues related to adoption of Bluetooth is cost, of course. An interesting bit of conversation follows: Analysts studies have shown that consumers will pay significant premiums to eliminate clutter, especially on the desktop. But to truly take off, Bluetooth headsets have to become a smaller percentage of that overall cost, said Michael Sharer, OEM sales manager at Fellowes Manufacturing Co. of Itasca, Ill., wandering the show floor in search of contacts. "As companies put more technology into phones, it will drive the price up," Sharer said. "But paying $100 for a headset is not going to be something people who buy these cheap, refurbished phones are going to do. It's like saying, OK, you're going to buy a $400 PC as well as a $400 Klipsch speaker system? That's as much as the PC. That doesn't happen."
That, makes good sense. The industry has to realize that while these phones and our beloved Palms come bundled with Bluetooth capability, the average person who spent $400 for a Tungsten X, (Generic Palm with BT I just made up, don't wanna be quoted tomorrow that I have announced the release of the new PALM X at $400 LOL) is not going to turn around and spend another $100 ( one quarter of the purchase price) just to lose the wire going from their PDA to the headset. (Except maybe Sammy)
So in closing, I guess I have talked myself into blaming the industry as well as the consumer for hindering the growth of a very cool and benefical technology. If any one cares to join in, maybe you could drop a line or two into your PALM stories that you all are sending in, and give us a quick Bluetooth opinion. I for one, would like to hear it.

HARDWARE:REVIEW: LARRY GARFIELD LOOKS AT SPRINT'S TREO 600
While most of us were getting that last minute XMAS shopping in yesterday, it seems Larry Garfield was getting his last review up and posted on InfoSynch. One of my favorite news sources, both InfoSynch and Larry Garfield do an excellent job. So if you got a TREO 600 today, take a look at what Larry thinks about it, or if you need to spend some of that Christmas Cash, maybe a TREO 600 is in your future?
While manyReview: Handspring Treo 600 by Sprint
By: Larry Garfield, Wednesday 24th December 2003, 22:45 GMT companies are heading towards hybrid handheld/phones, Handspring is already there. Larry Garfield oogles at the Handspring Treo 600.
Handspring has long had a reputation for paying attention to the "little details" that make or break a handheld. It's latest, and last independent, device is the Treo 600, which like its predecessor shows an attention to detail and polish that is second to none in the industry today. The Treo 600 replaces the Treo 300 as the standard-setting hybrid device on the market, and the wireless handheld to beat.
Design
The Treo 600 is a tiny candybar unit, which crucially feels more like a phone than a PDA in the hand. Although it is relatively thick it is ergonomically shaped and sits very comfortably in the palm. This is the first reason why the 600 is so good: it is a full PDA with a touchscreen and a thumbboard, and yet its phone features don't feel out of place: one never feels like they're holding a computer to their head. Perhaps most importantly, it's small enough to carry everywhere like a phone.

NEWS: WAP Energiser Breathes New Life Into Old Content
MobileAware, specialists in delivering Internet content to wireless PDA's. wireless handsets and other portable DATA devices, today announces the availability of its WAP Energiser.
MobileAware’s WAP Energiser is a plug-and-play, ‘device-aware’ real-time engine that, in a mobile environment increasingly characterised by colour screens and greater memory, overcomes the limitations of existing WAP content by inserting colour icons and images, tailoring delivery according to handset capabilities, and providing additional campaign and marketing management tools.
Today there are thousands of WAP content sites accessible by mobile devices. The problem is that most WAP site content is presented in a “one-size fits all” format targeting first generation WAP browsers, resulting in small greyscale text and limited navigation. Recognising this, MobileAware developed WAP Energiser to take bland content and, without changing the code, optimise it in real- time to transform the existing portal into an easily accessible, colourful experience. Automatic generation of access keys for one-touch navigation, softkey labelling and click-through navigation links transform the user experience and create new service and marketing opportunities.
WAP Energiser provides simple web-based site management, and allows marketing teams to become involved in the look and feel of content to deliver consistent branding, campaign management, banner advertising or the running of real-time competitions. More than just a face-lift, WAP Energiser totally revamps the WAP environment for users and creates new market and revenue generating opportunities for operators and content providers.
According to Paul Strzelecki, Executive Chairman, MobileAware: “Presentation is one of the key barriers to even greater uptake of mobile data content – and current WAP presentation is generally dull. Despite this, WAP usage is on the rise with some 29 million page impressions every day in the UK alone.”
“MobileAware’s WAP Energiser represents a huge step forwards in terms of presentation and campaign management that will excite operators and content owners, help to create new services and transform the WAP experience,”
Strzelecki believes the mobile data content market will reach mass consumer levels when the issues surrounding availability and accessibility of content from wireless handsets and its on-screen presentation have been solved.
“With WAP Energiser, MobileAware adds greater value and appeal to already existing content, and solves crucial problems that have dogged WAP from the beginning with a real solution that is available today.”

NEWS: Wireless2Web Founder Receives Patent for LinkPush Technology
Dec. 12, 2003 12:31 PM EST
LOS ANGELES—Richard Helferich, Wireless2Web founder, has been awarded a patent from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for its LinkPush technology included in Wireless2Web’s multi-modal TalkBack feature that enables wireless phone users to verbally respond to text messages.
With LinkPush, cell-phone users receive short text messages indicating they have a message waiting and an option of acting on the message, by retrieving, deleting or forwarding it. The solution minimizes clutter on the handset and conserves bandwidth, according to Wireless2Web. “It is as if we sent the user an Internet hyperlink, wirelessly, directly to their wireless device, Smartphone or cell phone,” said Helferich.

REVIEW: Zodiac Not Quite Star in Handheld Market
I found this review rather enlightening and objective. Picks up on some interesting quirks about the Zodiac. Sounds like SONY is got the "ZODIAC KILLER" in the wings, or so the author believes. And then there is those guys at NOKIA....... Sounds like it's gonna be an interesting future in mobile gaming with integrated devices. Or is it integrated devices with built in mobile gaming? Or is it......
Video Gaming Never Looked So Good On A Handheld Computer.
By ERIK STETSON Associated Press writer
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -
The Zodiac from Tapwave Inc. is a first: a portable digital assistant based on the Palm operating system that's built mainly for playing games.
With a sleek oval design, a snazzy gray-and-silver finish and a thumb joystick, the Zodiac makes Nintendo's Game Boy Advance look like a blocky, budget-level Toyota. Yet while its vivid, 16,000-color display is gorgeous, the Zodiac does have its shortcomings.
Tapwave got plenty right: the six-ounce Zodiac boasts a screen about 50 percent bigger than Palm's top models and on par with Sony's best multimedia handhelds.
Game Boy Advances have twice as many colors, but only a quarter of the screen resolution.
Nokia's new N-Gage, a combination cell phone/gaming device, places dead last here, with only about 4,000 colors, a screen resolution roughly equal to the Game Boy's and contact-lens sized games that are difficult to install.
With a built-in eight-megabyte graphics accelerator, the Zodiac has almost unheard-of muscle among handhelds. And it has stereo speakers and support for headphones and external speakers that enhance music- and video-playing.
The Zodiac offers more input options to game makers and players, with two shoulder buttons and a set of four-way buttons - in addition to the joystick and stylus.
A Zodiac with 32 megabytes of built-in storage costs $300. For $400 you get 128 megabytes. Other high-end handhelds can cost $600 or more. This one even vibrates, and its screen display rotates horizontally or vertically with the tap of a stylus.
But the Zodiac's beefy specs alone won't win it converts.
For one thing, the Game Boy Advance has an overwhelming edge with its titanic library of more than 550 game titles.
Both the Zodiac and N-Gage are scheduled to get less than 25 titles each so far, with the Zodiac getting a few top titles the N-Gage won't, including the role-player Neverwinter Nights and shoot-em-ups Doom II and Duke Nukem.
Also, the Zodiac can't do two things at once. For example, it can't play music while showing stored pictures. This is common in handhelds, but walking and chewing gum at the same time ought to be easy for a comprehensive new entertainment device like this.
Zodiacs also lack certain features increasingly common in high-end handhelds, such as voice recording and a thumb keyboard - or the ability to attach one. The software doesn't link with Microsoft Outlook's e-mail program as a standard feature.
The Zodiac also comes up a little short on multiplayer gaming, offering it only via a Bluetooth wireless connection, which has a range of just 30 feet.
Bluetooth-networked games tended to take at least a minute on average to start when I tested them with two Zodiacs.
A few games didn't connect at all and others, including top offerings like Spy Hunter, were rather sluggish and difficult to control.
Tapwave aimed to beat Sony to the punch with the Zodiac. Sony's PlayStation Portable, promised for late 2004, is being touted as the ``Walkman of the 21st Century.''
Tapwave has partly succeeded. But Zodiacs are only evolutionary, not revolutionary.
I think I'll wait for Sony's attempt
